Congratulations to the 12U Team - District 4 Champs!

Manager Steve Boyd's "Tournament Journal"

After beating Brighton in our opening game on 7/7 (16-11) our team was off to a good start. Our next opponent was Pittsford North 7/12 who we slowly dismantled. By the 5th inning the umpires called the game because we had 10 runs on them so the mercy rule was in effect. In the 3rd game our opponent was Webster National. Again my team was playing on full cylinders. Final score 8-2 us. Because we were 3-0 we knew we had made semi's. Our fourth and final opponent before semi's was Penfield American. Loaded with talented players, Penfield took it to us hard. Before we knew it, game was over and Penfield American beat us 7-0.

On 7/17 we played the semi-final game. Our opponent was Fairport National. They were 4-0 and playing well. Fairport National quickly took a 3-0 lead and looked good. In the 4th inning we managed to get 2 runners on when Alex Segnit steps to the plate. Alex hit a timely home run to tie the game and give Fairport American life again. In the 5th inning, Nick Boyd hit a 3 run home run and Fairport American went on to win 8-3. Fairport American pitchers Tim Gaudioso and Matt Buss combined for the win putting us into the district championship game. Not only are we playing for the championship game but we'd have to play the mighty Penfield American team again because they won their semi-final game vs. Penfield National to make it to the finals. To add more drama, Penfield's ace pitcher is available and will be pitching against us.

So here we are, on Penfield soil playing against power house Penfield American with hundreds of fans from all over. You could feel the energy in the air. Our kids were ready for battle and we were not going away without a fight. 11 year old fearless Matt Johnson was called upon to start the game on the mound. Matt had 12 year old T.J. Lucey catching for him who called the pitch's and controlled the game defensively. T.J. was rock solid. Because we won the toss, we chose to be the home team making Penfield bat first. We wanted last at bats! Penfield as usual, came out of the gate fast with clutch hitting. Penfield managed to get their first 6 batters on base in the first inning. The good news for us, we held them to 2 runs. Our middle infielders were under a lot of pressure (Devon Lejnieks, Sam Gueli) all game and we were aided by excellent defensive plays by Mike DeWind and Tim Gaudioso throughout the game. They always came up with the big plays when we needed it.

Matt Johnson shut down the Penfield batters for the next 2 innings before Penfield caught a lucky break on a fluke error that got them their 3rd run. In the bottom of the fourth, down 3-0, Connor Sullivan and Jonathan DeLaFuente had huge at bats. Both found a way to get on. With 2 runners on, Lejnieks hit a rocket one hopper to the fence scoring 2 runs. With the score 3-2 Penfield, we head back out top of 5th to play defense. Nick Boyd, relief pitcher, came in for Johnson and tried to shut down the power Penfield offense. Penfield had the top of the line coming to the plate and the pressure was on Fairport to keep the game close in hopes of a comeback. With a couple errors and a timely base hit, Penfield managed to get 2 runners across the plate before ending the top of the 5th. With the score 5-2 Penfield American, the hopes of Fairport American winning the game was looking grim. Coach Boyd and Coach Lucey huddled the boys up to remind them the game is not over and lets take one bat at a time.

With Penfield's ace off the mound due to pitch count rules, the relief pitcher that came in looked just as confident and had some heat. Leading of was Alex Segnit. Alex hit the ball hard but the Penfield shortstop was solid and threw him out. Devon Lejnieks was our second batter. With the whole Penfield side already pre-celebrating the victory, Devon hit a huge single keeping Fairport hopes alive. Our 3rd batter T.J. Lucey took a full count strikeout pitch and Penfield is now working into a pre- frenzy. Our fourth batter Nick Boyd crushed a grounder past the Penfield 2nd baseman that didn’t want any part of that ball. Our 5th batter Matt Buss blasted a base hit scoring Lejnieks and Boyd. The Fairport side line was going crazy at this point but still nervous with two outs and the score 5-3 Penfield. With Buss and Johnson on base, Christian Rizzolo had the weight of the tournament on his shoulders. Christian was 0-3 and not having much luck in his first 3 at bats. Coach Boyd told Christian to take a deep breath, relax and swing like you mean it. With 2 outs, 2 strikes, 2 runs down Christian got a hold of an outside fastball and put it over the left field fence. Final score Fairport American 6, Penfield American 5.

For the first time since 2005 and the third time this decade, Fairport 12U wins the District 4 Championship.
